The Heritage Advisory Committee contributes strategic input and advice to City Council and City staff on matters pertaining to conservation of cultural heritage resource in the City of Guelph, including identifying, protecting, conserving, and promoting cultural heritage resources in the community through designation, education, and stewardship.

Authorized by the City Council in August 1977 in compliance with the Ontario Heritage Act of 1975, the Heritage Advisory Committee brings diverse public expertise and knowledge with respect to conservation of cultural heritage resource in the City of Guelph. Their mandate includes:
- matters associated with the identification, evaluation, listing, conservation, and designation of cultural heritage resources;
- identification of cultural heritage resources within the City in accordance with the criteria for determining cultural heritage value or
  interest established by Provincial regulation;
- advising on cultural heritage value or interest on all matters referred to it by Council;
- encouraging and fostering public education, awareness, participation in, and appreciation of the conservation of cultural heritage
  resources;
- development proposals that require a Cultural Heritage Resources Impact Assessment, Conservation Plan, or Cultural Heritage Evaluation
  Report;
- advising on appropriate policies for the conservation of cultural heritage resources within the City of Guelph, including Official Plan 
  policies;
- providing advice to City Council and commenting on legislation, programs and funding that may impact the community’s cultural
  heritage resources;
- assisting Heritage Planning staff in the identification of significant cultural heritage resources; and
- providing advice to Heritage Planning staff as required regarding financial incentives for designated properties.

Board Information

The Heritage Advisory Committee will meet monthly, as required, on the first Thursday of the month at 12:00 p.m., excluding August.

The length of meetings will typically not exceed two hours.

All meetings will be conducted in a hybrid format, where possible.

50 per cent + 1 of the currently appointed members, to a minimum of three members.

The Heritage Advisory Committee shall consist of nine members appointed by Guelph City Council as per the Public Appointment Policy.

Committee members will bring a mix of lived and professional expertise, knowledge and interest related to:
- heritage conservation;
- planning;
- museums;
- archaeology;
- engineering;
- architecture;
- heritage trades;
- real estate;
- history;
- law; 
- heritage consulting;
- libraries, archives, heritage/history education; 
- Indigenous ecological/ancestral knowledge; and
- landscape architecture and/or natural heritage.

The Heritage Advisory Committee’s composition should also reflect demographic diversity, including ethnicity, gender, disability, etc., to ensure that the committee's advice to City Council reflects Guelph's diverse community, with a focus on engaging those who are underrepresented in local policy making.
